Hell paints a dire picture of a world in the not too distant future. It is the year 2016: temperatures have risen ten degrees, enough to mean you cannot go into the sun without protective layering, and that crops and livestock are scarce. Water is prized and desperate people have turned to extremes just to survive. We meet Phillip and Marie who are a couple, mostly out of convenience, as Phillip has a car. They are travelling with Leonie, Marie's younger sister, and we learn that they have no other family left. They have become victims of the scorching sun. We are taken on their journey towards the mountains, in an attempt to find water. What follows is a somewhat repetitive albeit frightening cat and mouse game as our characters fight to survive against both the amplified environment, and the other survivors. The movie is bleak, in both tone and colour contrast. The sun is blinding and most everything else is grey or dark. This palette was obviously an aesthetic choice, and it is successful in portraying the harshness and severity of this new world. It also means that it is difficult at times to identify the characters. This complicates the viewer's ability to connect with the movie and the individuals, which is surely counter-productive to the aim of the movie to draw people in. It still had me shouting at the main characters though, which is surely a marker of a good suspense film. On the positive side, while not shying away from violence in fight scenes, it is not as gory as Hollywood examples of this genre. Someone is shot, someone gets their face bitten, but it manages to convey that without showing us every ruptured vein and blood spatter. Overall, if you enjoy apocalyptic movies and suspense sequences, this is one to watch Just remember to take your glasses. 4 / 5 Stars Reviewed at Festival of German Films More info HERE
