REVIEW: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL (MICF2012): Karen Sims is Two Champagnes from Happiness

Karen Sims walked out onto the stage and proceeded to ask us questions. Us? The audience gulped, but there was nothing to be worried about.

Two Champagnes from Happiness
was made up of Karen’s comments and chats with the front row. She pulled out giant cards with random topics: frugality and stupidity = a bad combination, love, knowing your place and of course, sexual cripples dressing like whores.

Karen shared her thoughts and turned the questions towards the crowd. Some of the subjects ("what’s your neurosis?") got no response, but others got everyone chatting. Apparently everyone loves the Village People. She had some clever observations about the small things in life. The people next to me nodded in agreement and I heard a "you’re right" coming from behind.

A comedy show has never inspired me to try something before – like coffee and juice names. Karen Sims is not the most interesting name out there, so Karen spices things up when she orders drinks. Sometimes she’s Stella. Or Anastasia.

There is something very likeable about Karen, even when she’s politically incorrect or going on a rant. She’s a laidback and self-deprecating storyteller. The show felt like being in a pub with a charismatic friend. Not every joke will make you laugh, but there’s a smile on your face waiting for the next one.

Two Champagnes from Happiness wasn’t laugh out loud, but it was a very pleasant way to spend an hour.

Chuckle factor: 2.5/5
