REVIEW: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL (MICF2012) - Deadly Funny National Showcase

Written by Marnie Banger

There is no denying that Aboriginal issues can be a somewhat sensitive topic in the land of Oz. Thankfully, the Deadly Funny showcase is a welcome reminder that the best way to cut through the fog of sensitivity is with a few chuckles. With unabashed musings on racism and what it is that makes Indigenous Australians who they are, it's a breathe of fresh air to have a show where things aren’t left unsaid.

Dancing on to the stage with moves that would put Jagger to shame, seasoned MC Sean Choolburra quickly sucked the crowd in with his infectious presence. His first minutes on stage were killer, talking in characteristically fast pace of his goat-inspired proposal idea and what lads look for in a wife. Such was his rapport with the audience that his fumbling for the names of each act as the show progressed erred on the side of being entertaining foible rather than disorganized shamble.

The other comics varied in their ability, with first man up Cy Fahey spouting puns that led more to audible cringes than chortles. It did get better from there, with winner of the first Deadly Funny - back when it was competitive - Mia Stanford, speaking hilariously honestly about her recent motherhood. Tristan Savage, playing the character of a discrimination prevention officer, and the expressive extraordinaire Kevin Kropinyeri were also highlights. But the unexpected gem was crowd pleaser Shane Campbell, whose first attempt at stand up (though you wouldn’t know it) gave a depiction of himself as the Beyonce amongst his friends.

The showcase lagged in the final announcements, but what it lacked in traction and pace, it made up for in its celebration of culture and willingness to go outside of the safety zone. There are definite names to watch amongst this crew.
