INTERVIEW: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL (MICF2012) : Dave Gorman

Written by Marnie Banger

Dave Gorman is not a man to be constrained to one medium. The English comic seems to have more pursuits than you could poke a reasonably sized stick at, with stage acts, radio gigs, TV shows and bestselling books to his name. “Whichever one I’m not doing is my favorite”, he says.  “I would get really bored if I only did one”.

Gorman is famously open to meeting new people. His latest book, Dave Gorman VS The Rest of The World, tells of him playing games with strangers all across Britain, from ultimate frisbee to Egyptian laser chess. He admits that his willingness to interact with people has led to him meeting more than a few oddballs. Gorman chose to write the latest book only after being punched in the face while playing a thinly disguised creationist board game with a man in the English countryside. “That is what the book becomes about”, he says. “Me deciding not to let people like him change who I want to be”.

A number of Gorman’s shows, including his cult classics Are You Dave Gorman? and Googlewhack Adventure, have emerged in this unexpected way. “Most things become projects with hindsight but I’m not really aware that’s what they are when they’re happening”, he says. “They end up being a TV show or a book but they're not necessarily being made as such at the time”.

As the title suggests, Gorman’s latest stand-up show Dave Gorman’s Powerpoint Presentation sees him giving the ol’ powerpoint a workout. But Gorman says the 800-slide show “doesn't bear any relation whatsoever to any corporate presentation you've ever seen”, as it is not really about the powerpoint. “I know it doesn't sound like a comedy show, but comedy shows which sound like comedy shows are often crap”.
