Canberra: our nation's capital. Home to museums, politicians and a thriving comedy scene. Capital punishment featured a selection of Canberra's best comedians in one hilarious show. Apparently. Greg Kimball opened the gig with jokes that fell on seemingly deaf ears. He recovered by talking about his love of bacon. He explained that as a long-term relationship guy he was hot like 'a fixed term deposit'. Nothing from the crowd.Jez Margosis leapt on stage with some self-deprecating stories. This was promising, the people next to me perked up. Jez's told tales about giving birth, the 'car park mafia' of mothers at school and his vasectomy. A million dick jokes followed. I have never heard such a silent audience. Marie Helou breathed some new life into the show. Her dance moves got a big response, but there were a lot of cheesy jokes; her doctor ex became a stalker, so she had an apple a day. Guess what happened? Kale Bogdanova showed off his quirky turn of phrase and smarts. He explained his sexual failures, confusing road signs and how after 'ten years of desire and shame' he bought a denim jacket. He's one to watch. Rafe Morris ended with a musical set about evil housemates and Angry Birds. Likeable and wide-eyed, Rafe got lots of laughs when he pulled out the 'kazoo of freedom' during a song about the Occupy movement. Capital punishment was saved by the second half, but it wasn't enough to forget what had come before. Chuckle factor: 2/5 Buy tickets HERE
